Nature Programs

Environmental Education is a big part of what we do here. Did you know that you can learn more about nature by daily visiting the plants, animals and birds in your own back yard than by going on expensive trips to exotic wilderness areas?  People in native cultures all around the world have a common saying,

“The best teacher is one place.”

This year our family has been participating in the Kamana Naturalist Training Program, which is  based on Native American teachings about the importance of developing connection with Mother Nature through knowledge of one’s own bioregion. The Kamana Program uses ancient and modern  techniques such as survival skills, animal tracking, nature journaling & mapping, as well as  the time honored practice of sitting silently outside at the same place each day.

I never realized just how important this practice of Sit Spot was, until I looked out the window one day and saw my daughter covered with Chickadees. They have come to accept and welcome her presence. And now, when she leaves the house they will fly down to remind her;

“It is time to put seed at the feeder!“
